Hesalite and acrylic glass
Hesalite is a brand name for acrylic glass — a clear plastic. It scratches far more easily than mineral glass and sapphire, but in return it does not shatter: it turns cloudy instead of breaking, and scratches can be polished away completely with a tube of polish in five minutes. That is why it was used in space travel and is still found on some classic watches — also because it gives a warm, slightly distorted edge that many people love.
